Fueled by President Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Act of 1830, the Trail of Tears was the forced removal of Native American Tribes from tribal lands in the Southeastern United States to reservations in Oklahoma. The Tennessee River comprised a portion of the journey for these Native Americans. Roughly 2,300 Cherokee moved through Decatur on their way to Indian Territory in Oklahoma.
