Welcome to North Courtland, also known as "The Hill," a historically predominant African American community. Incorporated since 1981, North Courtland is a vibrant and proud community with a long history dedicated to the education and uplift of its residents.
This tour guides you through some of North Cortland's most important sites and tells the story of a community that worked to educate the African American children of Lawrence County and beyond for much of the twentieth century.
From emancipation through Jim Crow and the modern Civil Rights movement, residents of North Courtland ensured their children could receive an education. This is their story.
